In traditional yoga, Utkatasana is called Chair Pose. In this gentle version, you practice standing up from and lowering toward a real chair. It is a calm, controlled movement that many people use as part of everyday activity practice.
How to Practice Gentle Chair Pose
- Stand in front of a sturdy chair, with the backs of your legs near the seat. Place the chair against a wall so it cannot slide.
- Set your feet about hip-width apart.
- Breathe in and reach your arms forward at shoulder height for balance, or hold a sturdy counter in front of you.
- Breathe out and bend your knees slowly, sending your hips back as if you were about to sit.
- Lower only as far as feels comfortable. You may lightly sit, or hover just above the seat.
- Breathe in and press gently through your feet to stand tall again.
- Repeat three to five times, resting between each one.
Easy Modifications
- Hold a kitchen counter or the back of a second sturdy chair for extra support.
- Make the bend very small and shallow.
- Ask a friend, family member, or instructor to stay close while you practice.
Mindful Tips
- Keep your knees pointing in the same direction as your toes.
- Move slowly in both directions.
- Stop and rest any time you feel unsteady.
Safety first: Practice beside a sturdy chair or a wall. Move slowly, breathe comfortably, and stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath. This guide is educational only and is not medical advice. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
