Tree Pose with Chair Support: Building Steadiness

Tree Pose, or Vrksasana, is a balancing pose that invites steadiness and focus. With a chair for support, it becomes a calm practice that you can enjoy at any level.

How to Practice Tree Pose with Chair Support

  1. Stand next to a sturdy chair and rest one hand on the back. Turn the chair against a wall if needed.
  2. Feel your weight settle evenly through both feet.
  3. Shift your weight onto the foot closest to the chair. Keep the other knee soft.
  4. Place the sole of your other foot gently against your ankle or calf. Keep the toes of that foot on the floor if you prefer, like a kickstand.
  5. Never place your foot against the side of the knee.
  6. Look at a steady point ahead of you. Breathe slowly for five to ten breaths.
  7. Lower the foot and switch sides.

Easy Modifications

  • Keep both hands on the chair.
  • Lightly rest your toes on the floor throughout.
  • Stand with your back near a wall for additional support.

Mindful Tips

  • Wear non-slip footwear or practice on a non-slip surface.
  • Keep your breathing smooth and your shoulders relaxed.
  • Remember that wobbling is normal. It is part of practicing balance.

Safety first: Practice beside a sturdy chair or a wall. Move slowly, breathe comfortably, and stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath. This guide is educational only and is not medical advice. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
